February 8th, 2010

Super League outfit Cavaliers continued their giant-killing act by eliminating premier league champion Tivoli Gardens 2-1 in the Claro/KSAFA Jackie Bell knockout competition last night. On a night when the lesser teams emerged victorious at the Harbour View Mini-Satdium, August Town clipped Boys’ Town 1-0 in the all-premier league match-up to set up a final date with Cavaliers.

Cavaliers, which are lying second in the Claro Super League, one point behind Rae Town with a game in hand, also knocked out premier league title contender Waterhouse in the quarterfinal. This time they came from behind and knocked out the defending champion in extra time after Owen Powell had given Tivoli a 63rd minute lead.

But goals by Donovan Alvaranga in the 79th levelled the game and sent it into extra time before David Laylor got the winner in 105th minute for a famous win.

Earlier, Akeem Thenstead fired home in the 53rd minute after Boys’ Town defender Asrick Samuels miskicked in the 18-yard box.

August Town had previously eliminated many times champion Arnett Gardens 3-0 on the quarterfinal.

With Cavaliers idle, Rae Town assumed sole leadership of the league with an impressive 3-0 whipping of Barbican at Breezy Castle.

They moved to 41 points, one ahead of Cavaliers who has a game in hand against Mountain View. Barbican with their ninth loss remained in eighth on 19 points.

Third-placed Santos missed a chance to close the gap on the leaders after battling to a 1-1 draw with Maverley/Hughenden. Second-placed Rockfort dropped two crucial points after been held to a 0-0 draw with Brown’s Town at the Bull Pen.
