The
inaugural press launch of the Jackie Bell Memorial
KO (so called at the time) was held on Monday, September
21,1987 at J Wray and Nephew. Patrick Gillings, brand
manager, Red Label Wine chaired the occasion.
Greetings were brought by newly elected JFF president,
Tony James and Roy Howell on behalf of Santos football
Club.
KSAFA
president delivered his address and received the
sponsorship cheque from J Wray and Nephew’s marketing
manager, Tony Burrowes. League Director Dougal
Campbell moved the vote of thanks.
The
competition is named in honour of the memory of a
great Jamaican sportsman Winthorp ’Jackie’ Bell who
died in a bus crash along with fellow STGC alma-mater
Dennis Ziadie at the World Cup finals of 1986 in
Mexico. He was a former St George’ College Manning Cup
player, national player, coach of Santos Football Club
and president of the Club,
The
Jackie Bell KO started in 1987 and is regarded as a
family competition as it embraces all KSAFA affiliated
clubs which participate in the JFF’s National Premier
League (NPL) and all KSAFA run senior competitions-Syd
Bartlett & Major League and more recently the Super
League. It also serves as a qualifying competition for JFF knockout competition for the two best placed KSAFA
clubs not in the current NPL competition.
Prior
to the Jackie Bell Knockout, the KSAFA clubs used to
compete for the President’s Cup and UMOJA Knockout the
former being contested by the top four (4) clubs from
the previous season and the latter involving all KSAFA
affiliated clubs. These however, were played on an “on
a and off basis” and the Jackie Bell Knockout has been
the most consistent of the three (3) competitions over
the past four decades.
Over the 24 years of
the competition to date, the Jackie Bell KO has been
endorsed by: six (6) corporate title sponsors, the
Bell family and the KSAFA Confederation itself.
J. Wray and Nephew
under the brand name Red Label Wine was the first
corporate sponsor to come on board. Marketing manager
Tony Burrowes kicked off the inaugural 1987/88 season
,but the company withdrew after a year. In order to
ensure continuity, the Bell family with the assistance
of private donors, took up the slack in the ensuing
1988/89; 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons. J Wray and
Nephew returned to the fold, but only briefly and
opted out and the end of the 1991/92 season.
One of the Bell
brothers, Vernon Bell, then managing director of Tyre
World Ltd , secured his parent company support and
Neal& Massey (Ja) Ltd thus became the second corporate
sponsor for the 1992/93 season. For the next three
years of the Linnel Mclean administration ending
1995/96, KSAFA self sponsored the competition from
gate receipts particularly from the Jackie Bell KO
which served to underline the latter as the
Confederation’s flagship competition.
The newly elected AB
Stewart Stephenson administration successfully lured
back J Wray and Nephew with a 2 year contract spanning
1996/97&1997/1998. Following non renewal of the Red
Label Wine branding , the 2nd term Stephenson
adminsitration started out by pledging a million
dollars in self sponsorship .Mid-way the 1997/1998
season however, a new three year deal ending 2000/2001
was inked with the third corporate sponsor, Jamaica
National Building Society(JNBS). The relationship with
the Emile Spence marketing department carried over to
new president Richard ’Roots ‘ Nathan and cumulatively
totaled a record 6years ending with the Orville
Marshall administration of 2003/04.
Grace Kennedy
Remittance Services under the brand name Western Union
was the 4th corporate sponsor. Contracts totaling five
years ending 2008/09 ,were successively negotiated by
Stewart Stephenson’s four year administration of
‘Soild of Achievers ’and ‘Team Success’ ;and one year
into the administration KSAFA’s 13 president, Rudolph
Speid. American Mobile was the 5th corporate sponsor
and Jackie Bell KO played under the multinational’s
Claro brand for 2 years ending 2010/11.
A three year $12
million deal , commencing with the 2011/12 season, was
signed by KSAFA president Rudolph Speid and Global
Directories, Jamaica manager Lester Garnett,. It
represented the 6th corporate sponsorship of the
Jackie Bell this time under a new branding, Jamaica
Yellow Pages.

Constant Spring,
1987-1988
KSAFA Jackie Bell KO
Champion
|
The
Danny Lyn coached Constant Spring won the 1987
inaugural competition. Due to withdrawal of the
availability of the National Stadium occasioned by
violence at a semifinal match, the competition was
abandoned in the following year. Duhaney Park was the
first non NPL Club to win the coveted title. The
title has eluded Santos and Cavaliers as the only two KSAFA clubs to have won NPL tiles but not the Jackie
Bell KO. Arnett Gardens FC and Waterhouse FC have
registered the most wins of five and four
respectively. Boys Town have registered only one hold
on the title winning the 2005/06 Jackie Bell KO for
the first time although ironically have won the senior
Major League titles more than any of the existing 40
KSAFA affiliates.
