History of the KSAFA U15

Ken Matthews Founding Patron of KSAFA Under 14

The competition originally started as U14 in 1987 by Carlton ‘Spanner ‘ Dennis the founder and president of the Ken Matthews FA (KMFA). It was named in honour of Ken Matthews a local businessman in the Franklin Town area (Matthews Engineering Works) . He was an avid football fan and member of the Santos Football Club . The competition was sponsored by the Matthews family in the early years.

The inaugural competition kicked off at Caxton Park in 1987. At that time about 8 teams participated with Santos emerging as winners defeating Rae Town 3-1 in the finals.

The competition was to run for the next 13 years by the KMFA

Winston "Chungie" Chung Fah kicking off the 2005 KSAFA Under-15 Competition, the first year of Shipping Industry Sponsorship.

headed by Carlton Dennis assisted by Ludlow Bernard .‘ Leroy ‘Okra ‘ Gibson was the perennial League Director.

Between 1991 and 1992 Supreme Chickens (now Island Grill) sponsored the competition. Sports Gears (owned by referee Peter Prendegast) carried the sponsorship between 1993 and 1995.

The competition fell under the aegis of the KSAFA in 2001 season at which time it was upgraded to U15 Milo sponsored the 2002 competition. It remained largely un-sponsored for the next three years ending 2004.

This is our third consecutive year of sponsorship and we think it fitting that the trophy honours "Chungie", a former YMCA footballer, former coach of the victorious Clarendon College as well as coach and founder of the Santos Football Club, one of Jamaica¹s great football clubs. Winston Chung Fah is a certified F. A. and Football International Federation (FIFA) coach, former technical director to the Jamaica National Football Association, and founder and director of the very successful Miami International Classic Football Tournament, and International Football Camp. Today, Chung Fah is still actively engaged as the technical director and advisor to the Cayman Islands Football Federation. He is in charge of the entire football development program of the islands.

The Shipping Association of Jamaica came on board in the 2004/05 season with a sponsorship of $500,000 inclusive of cover of referees’ fees as a new feature. The competition was named in honour of former Jamaica national coach & founder of Santos Football Club Winston Chung Fah. ‘Chungie’ as he is popularly called was also former technical director and advisor to the Cayman Islands Football Federation. He was a director of the very successful Miami International Football Classic. He came to national prominence with coaching of the famous Clarendon College DaCosta Cup football team that swept all school boys titles in 1977-1978 season. Many youth coaches such as Leebert Halliman, Jackie Walters, Carlton ‘Spanner’ Dennis and Donovan ‘DV’ Hayles, regarded Chung Fah as one of their inspirational coaches. On Sunday November 16, 2003 he was one of 5 national coaches to receive a JFF Special Award. This was presented by FIFA president Joseph ‘Sepp’ Blatter in a ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel’s Grand Ball Room in Kingston.

In 2007 The Shipping Association of Jamaica continued its sponsorship this time under the name of Shipping Industry of Jamaica.
